Kyeung Mi Oh, PhD, MSN, RN

Biography

Dr. Kyeung Mi Oh is a tenured professor in the School of Nursing, specializing in preventive care, gerontology, and quantitative research methods. She primarily teaches in the PhD program and mentors doctoral students on their dissertations.

Dr. Oh’s research improves health outcomes for first generation immigrants, underserved minorities, and older adults at risk for cognitive decline by translating findings into tailored interventions. She addresses barriers such as limited English proficiency, cultural misconceptions, low health and digital literacy, and restricted healthcare access, which contribute to delayed diagnoses and suboptimal management of cancer, dementia, and chronic conditions.

Dr. Oh’s previous research employed advanced communication and information technologies to enhance health literacy, increase access to care, and facilitate self-management of health conditions. She conducted culturally tailored interventions to improve cancer screening, smoking cessation, and chronic disease management among immigrant populations. In one study, she co-designed a graphic, native-language text messaging intervention to support smoking cessation in Chinese and Korean male immigrants with limited health literacy.

Dr. Oh is currently leading two studies. One aims to develop and validate an AI- and machine learning–integrated, multilingual application delivering non-pharmacological reminiscence therapy for community-dwelling older adults with, or at risk for, mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and their informal caregivers. This study evaluates the application’s usability and initial efficacy on health and psychosocial outcomes in older adult–caregiver dyads. The other study focuses on an AI-driven intervention that integrates wearable sensor data, ecological momentary assessments (EMA), and machine learning–based personalization to reduce dementia risk and elucidate the behavioral and biological mechanisms of risk reduction in late middle-aged and older adults.
